    Youth Team League Winners

Congratulations to our U12 side for wrapping up the title at Barnet Lane this weekend, following on from our U13 side winning their EJA title last week!

On bank holiday Monday, the Wingate & Finchley Development team beat Ware Sports FC 3-2 in the final of the HSCL Premier Division Cup.

It was a less than ideal start after our opponents raced to a 2-0 lead before half-time.

In the 60th minute, Aden Brazil pulled a goal back for the Blues with an attempt that came off his chest. However, 5 minutes later, hopes of a comeback were dashed after Blues ‘keeper Finn Rushton was given his marching orders by the referee for a late tackle on the Ware Sports forward. With no substitute goalkeeper on the bench, midfielder and captain Hamzet switched shirts, put on the gloves and took up his place in goal. He saved the resulting freekick comfortably which in turn provided the team with the confidence to go out and turn the game around.

Suffice to say the Blues left it late, but in the 80th minute, Cheikoumar Watt Ndongo equalised in a goalmouth scramble to make for a nervous last 10 minutes. The comeback was completed 2 minutes from time as Josip Jevdjic notched the winner after a delightful cross which saw Wingate & Finchley Development team crowned winners of the HSCL Premier Division Cup.

It was a remarkable feat for the team who not only lost the first game of the competition but were also made up predominantly of U18 players. Peter Renkin, Lee Protheroe and Tashan Bradshaw-Brown put the team together 5 weeks ago just with the view to playing in the cup competition. It’s testament to the coaches that they found the perfect blend of U23s and U18s to guide the side to victory. Peter said “We’re incredibly proud of the effort the boys have put in over the last 5 weeks. Some of those games were really physical but the character of the squad shone through and we’re really delighted for them, especially the younger ones.”

    New Management Team Announced

We are delighted to announce the appointments of Marc “Weathers” Weatherstone as manager and Ahmet Rifat as Director of Football. The two spent over a decade playing together for the Club and will now work closely together to guide the Club into our new future.

Ahmet - Wingate & Finchley’s record appearance holder – is “incredibly proud and very excited to take up my new role at the Club. Anyone that knows me knows how much I love being around the Club. I'm especially looking forward to working alongside Marc again, but this time it’ll be off the pitch! We endeavour to work hard to ensure we bring success & consistency to the Club.”

Chairman Aron Sharpe’s involvement in football has always been about development and progression pathways for young players and coaches.

The appointments of Ahmet Rifat and Marc Weatherstone allow the Club to return to that ethos. “I hope that this brings each and every person at the Club great pleasure and is fully supported within the Club.

“We have had success on the lowest of budgets at our level. During my time as Chairman we have had our successes: winning the London Senior cup, promotion to the Isthmian Premier League and the Isthmian League cup treble season. Three seasons ago we reached the play-offs with a mix of youth and experience.

“I have felt that in the last few years we have drifted as a Club and more importantly diluted our identity.

“We have recently invested heavily in a training facility and refurbishing our historic stadium, although establishing a good infrastructure and facilities hasn’t necessarily reflected on the pitch at first team level”

“In order to achieve what the Club desires, cohesion from top to bottom is the primary importance and by appointing two players - who have nearly 1000 first team appearances between them - we hope to go some way towards finding that success once again.

“I have no doubt the addition of both Ahmet and Marc to our first team set-up will bring only positives.”

The Club are delighted to confirm that Lee Protheroe will continue as First Team Coach. Lee is well respected by the players and has stamped his mark on the talent below First Team Level by guiding the Development Team to a dramatic Herts Senior League Cup success yesterday (more to follow shortly).

Long serving Goalkeeper Coach Gavin King together with Franco Piazza and the medical team will all remain in the new set up.

Blues have parted company with first team manager Spencer Knight

Wingate & Finchley would like to announce that we have parted company with first team manager Spencer Knight. Spencer came on board in the autumn of 2018/19 and was unfortunate to have been at the helm for the two incomplete seasons which were then expunged by the FA.

Chairman Aron Sharpe explained "The decision has been made as the club in recent seasons has moved away from the very reason why I am involved in football at this level. It was felt by myself and within the club that our DNA was always based on development and a pathway for youngsters and providing opportunities for our players to develop as coaches and helping backroom medical staff and volunteers gain experience, for example Anthony Limbrick, Michael Stone, Steve Lilley just to name a few.

It is always a struggle at this level to find the balance between investing in the first team while focusing on development, but the Pandemic has allowed the Club to take stock and while the decision was a difficult one, it is something we felt was in the best interests of the Club in line with our ethos and provides exciting opportunities to rebuild.

I have a lot of respect for Spencer. He was the only person interviewed when he was hired and I have no doubt he will be a success in his next role. The Club wishes Spencer every success in his future pathway"

W&F Development team march into the Final of the HSCL Cup

After the Herts Senior County League (HSCL) was suspended on 17th December - and subsequently null and voided - an inter-league cup competition was announced. The Blues were drawn in Group A of the Premier Division Cup and endureda far from ideal start, losing 2-1 against Chipperfield Corinthians. However, determined not to exit the competition at the group stages, Wingate & Finchley beat Cuffley FC 3-1 in the second game with Kevonte Williams, Tarrel Watson-Noel and Luc Achermann getting the goals.

The must-win final group game came against Hoddesdon Town Reserves on April 17th. The in-form Kevonte Williams bagged a hattrick as the Blues stormed to a 4-1 victory which secured them a place in the semi-final. Drawn against Belstone FC, it was always going to be a tough game, especially given they had former England midfielder Joe Cole playing for them the week before. The Blues remained unfazed by their opponents and focused on their own game. Kevonte Williams scored another 2 goals as they edged Belstone 2-1 to progress to the final of the HSCL Premier Division Cup.

Wingate will now face Ware Sports FC in the final on bank holiday Monday (May 3rd) at Welwyn Garden City’s ground. Managers Lee Protheroe and Tashan Bradshaw-Brown will be hoping Kevonte Williams can add to his 6 goals in 4 games but in reality, it doesn’t matter who scores as long as the Blues have their hands on the trophy at full-time. Make sure to check into the Wingate & Finchley Development team Twitter page for the full-time result.

    Charity Partnership Supporting Ethiopian Children

Wingate Youth Trust together with Wingate and Finchley FC are proud to have worked with the Meketa charity ( to send football kits and funds to support the Jewish children in Ethiopia. The community have a number of soccer teams who compete in their local leagues. This is a great way of helping to integrate within the general community and is very akin to the origins of Wingate FC which was the formation of a Jewish football club in England and proved so successful when playing non-Jewish teams after WW2.

Wingate Youth Trust are committed to continue their support of the Jewish community in Ethiopia and should you wish to help please contact the Trust's Chairman Martin Stone at

    Henry Ochieng signs for Watford

Wingate & Finchley would like to congratulate former midfielder Henry Ochieng on his transfer to Watford FC.
Henry joined Wingate in the summer of 2019 and made 31 appearances for the club before signing for Cork City.
Following an impressive spell at the League of Ireland Premier Division side, he has secured a move to the Vicarage Road club and will join the U23s side.

Blues’ Chairman Aron Sharpe said: “I’m really pleased for Henry. He’s a really good guy, he’s really driven to be a professional football player and he’s a quality football player.
“It’s a great move for somebody who’s looking to make football their career – it’s a Premiership club – and it gives us great gravitas.
“We can take some plaudits because we really got Henry playing again, as well as {former players} Nathan Mavila {who signed for Swedish club Brage on Monday} and Scott Kashket [who featured in Wycombe’s FA Cup tie against Tottenham on Monday evening}.
“I say to all the boys: you really have to go a step at a time. {Henry} listened to us, he’s an intelligent guy and just thinks in the right way and it’s worked out for him, it’s been very successful for him.”

Spencer Knight's Comments Following Defeat At Hornchurch

A bitterly cold Tuesday night FA trophy clash resulted in a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Hornchurch FC. Tommy Tejan-Sie equalised for the Blues in the 16th minute following Ollie Muldoon’s earlier strike.
Spencer Knight (manager) said he was “disappointed with the result and going out of the Trophy but it was always going to be a tough tie against one of the better teams in the competition.”
He went on to say that there was “no shame in losing away at Hornchurch but [I’m] disappointed in the second half performance after we had played so well in the first half, and [ultimately] a couple of injuries and errors cost us the game in the end.”
He’s staying positive and insists we should not dwell on the result. “Now with the enforced lockdown period, we have to regroup and get ready for whenever the league starts again. We will be hoping to keep the lads prepared and ticking over for a January start but all in all, we don’t want to get too low after one result, especially off the back of some good performances in the previous games. We still want to remain positive and wish Hornchurch all the best in the competition.”
The Blues’ next match is unconfirmed but make sure to follow @WinFinchley on Twitter and check on the website for the most up to date information.

    Isthmian League Pause

We can announce that all league action has been delayed. A review is scheduled to take place on the 16th December, in line with the next Government Tier review. This means that our fixture against Leatherhead (12th December) has been postponed. However, our FA Trophy fixture on 8th December (Tuesday at 19.45) away against Hornchurch will take place, as will any further rounds should we progress in the competition.

The Clubs that make up the Trident Leagues have collectively decided that league football should only return when it is safe to do so, to reduce the risk of transmission between clubs in different tiers.

We understand the frustration of our fans following this announcement, but we hope you understand the precautions being taken at this time, so as to ensure that we can welcome you all back safely to the Maurice Rebak Stadium.

We shall continue to keep our fans updated on the resumption of league football.

Club launches Wall of Fame to mark the generous fan donations

The Blues, who have suffered considerably at the hands of the Covid-19, managed to raise an eye-watering £13,601 in a mere 32 days highlighting the nature of the club’s impact within the local community after launching a fundraising campaign over the first lockdown period - auctioning off a variety of rewards in return for a donation.

The Wall of Fame has now been put up on the Maurice Rebak main stand after chairman Aron Sharpe presented it to the supporters before kick-off at the home game against Cheshunt in their final match ahead of lockdown.

It’s a show of appreciation from the club who have an ever-growing and very loyal fanbase for their efforts to help the club survive.

The club are offering free tickets to any NHS worker to thank them for their incredible service - a scheme which will continue when football returns to the Isthmian League.

Our half-term football camp has been a great success, hosting over 100 boys & girls with an active, competitive and above all, enjoyable week of football.

    Youth In Focus: Summer Update

When the 2019-20 season was curtailed in March, the club introduced activities such as competitions and Zoom quizzes to keep in contact with our youth players. At that time, no one knew if and when football would return. While there were more important things than football to focus on, we were still busy preparing for the return of the new season - whenever that was to be.

As soon as FA and Government guidelines allowed, we were delighted that so many of our players were desperate to get back on the pitch and we thank our parents/families for co operating with COVID guidelines to allow us to put a smile back on so many young faces.

We eventually held trial sessions and we are excited to welcome many new players, parents and managers to the Wingate & Finchley family. We have a new U7 and U8 squad, and have teams in the top division of the Watford Friendly League next season, at each age group from U9 to U13. We also have 3 strong squads at U13, U15 and U18 level who will be competing in the Eastern Junior Alliance League.

Since grass roots friendly matches were allowed as of August 1st, many of our teams have taken the opportunity to get back playing competitively. Our U16s were victorious in the London FA Champion of Champions Cup Final and we hope that our new Development team, competing in the Herts Senior League, will provide a pathway to men's football for some of those boys.

With just two weeks to go until the youth season starts, we are still busy putting some final pieces in place including kit printing and we would like to thank the many youth sponsors of this season's match kits. I am sure the players will be proud to wear the new design.

Our new coaches are ready, and we look forward to our FA Youth Cup campaign and are also excited to welcome all the Wingate & Finchley family to Summers Lane again soon to support the first team.
