Wingate & Finchley’s search for three points at Nyewood Lane came to a shattering end following a difficult afternoon against high-flying Bognor Regis Town. Visiting goalkeeper Shane Gore was called into action within the opening five minutes, preventing Jimmy Wild’s dipping half-volley from the edge of the area. Gore was kept busy again producing another vital stop, keeping out James Muitt’s pin-point chip towards the top corner.
After 13 minutes, the opening goal arrived and fell the way of the hosts. Ollie Pearce’s free-kick from the inside left channel squirmed through everyone and nestled into the back of the net. It could have been double trouble for the Blues just two minutes later, but Gore was there to block Wild’s close-range attempt with his legs.
Ben Pattie tried his luck at the other end with an outside-of-the-boot attempt which curled past the upright, prior to an acrobatic clearance off the line by Ryan Sellers. The left-back positioned himself perfectly to clear James Fraser’s strike at goal from James Mills’ squared ball. Joe Sharpe’s pinpoint delivery to the far-post arrived towards Steve Wales, only for James Crane to take the ball away from his toes with a timed header. Keith Rowland's outfit hit the post just before the break, Wales’ corner to the near-post was flicked onto the woodwork by Sean Cronin.
Seven minutes after the restart, Bognor found themselves leading 2-0. Pearce pulled away unmarked connecting with Kimmy Muitt’s deep cross, heading back across goal for Wild to tap into a gaping net.
Gore produced another moment of brilliance. Cronin deflected Wilds’ shot off the line into the underside of the crossbar as the ‘keeper just about punched the danger clear. The afternoon was made even worse reaching 78 minutes. Fraser powered a strike past Gore from close connecting with a defence testing cross from Wild hogging the inside right channel.
A late consolation arrived through Reece Richards-Beckles who latched onto Ahmet Rifat’s delightful threaded pass before lifting his effort over Daniel Lincoln, seeing his shot measure into the bottom left-hand corner.
