Wingate & Finchley were taught a harsh lesson on taking chances on a rainy Tuesday night in Cheshunt, as Dipo Akinyemi’s curling effort condemned the Blues to another league defeat.
The evening could have been completely different, however, as after just three minutes, the visitors were awarded a spot kick for a foul on Tage Kennedy. However, having seen the lines on the pitch, the referee correctly overturned his decision and awarded a free-kick; which came to nothing.
The dominance continued however as Kennedy, Ahmet Rifat and Alan Fleming all saw half chances go wide or over, while Roman Michael-Percil’s burst in the box gave him the opportunity to break the deadlock but he could only drag wide.
The hosts upped their aggression towards the end of the half, earning themelsves serveral bookings but the teams went into the break level.
Nine minutes into the second half, the hosts scored the eventual winner. Akinyemi was fed the ball by former blue, Ola Williams and he turned before curling an inch-perfect finish into the top corner; leaving Shane Gore with no chance.
The visitors huffed and puffed but didn’t create any meaningful chances to level, with tame headers and wayward shots causing Harry Girling little trouble in the Cheshunt net.
Wingate now have 10 days off before travelling to Brightlingsea Regent on October 12th, the scene of a fantastic 1-0 win last season.
