On a cold Tuesday night in the middle of February, Wingate & Finchley edged out a 1-0 victory at The Maurice Rebak Stadium against Corinthian Casuals in the London Senior Cup Quarter Final, thanks to a second half goal from Great Evans.
The home side started off brightly, the closest Wingate came to taking the lead was when Toby Bancroft's effort from inside the box hit the post. With a few more chances flying past the goal for the home side, eventually Corinthian Casuals came charging down creating chances of their own until Jake Eales provided two crucial blocks to deny the away side from taking the lead. On the brink of half time, the Blues came close again to take the lead following a set piece where Bilal Sayoud misplaced his shot towards the left-hand side of the goal.
The second half kicked off with both teams powering down to create end to end chances. Eventually, the deadlock was broken in the 52nd minute when Evans poked a left-footed shot underneath Danny Bracken to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. A few minutes later Charlie Ruff darted through on goal with a clear-cut chance to double the lead for Spencer Knight’s team, however his shot was comfortably held down by Bracken. Throughout the remainder of the half, the visitors continued to pile on the pressure and came close to scoring an equaliser until Fergal Hale-Brown tipped round a shot from Gabriel Odunaike.
Wingate comfortably hung on to clinch a comfortable victory and will face either Balham or Hendon away in the Semi Final.
