Bostik League Premier

Wingate and Finchley played out a composed 1-1 draw with Enfield Town on Bank Holiday Monday. Town, who came into this fixture unbeaten so far in the league, found themselves behind in the first-half thanks to Marc Charles-Smith’s close range effort.

But Aaron Greene’s equaliser with 20 minutes left on the clock kept their streak going. Both sides had chances to take all three points, but on reflection a draw seemed the fairest result. After a 6-1 battering of Burgess Hill Town on Saturday, Enfield arrived in Finchley confident of beating a side not far off Burgess in the relegation zone.

But Wingate also won at the weekend, and their determination shone brightest in the early stages. Tommy Tejan-Sie’s darting run into the box saw the ball picked off his feet by Charles-Smith and diverted into the bottom corner to put Wingate 1-0 up after 24 minutes.

Sam Chaney came closest to levelling the scores in the first half but his shot flew across the face of goal and the Blues took their lead into the break. Lewis Putman had two glorious chances to double Wingate’s lead. First, a downwards header that Joe Wright was well positioned to gather.

The second saw him pluck a ball out of the sky, chop on to his right foot and curl a shot into the chest of Wright with the goal gaping. Shane Gore did excellently to keep the Town at bay, but there was nothing he could do when a 72nd minute ball floated over his head was smashed in by Greene at the back post.

Putman and Charles-Smith both sent subsequent chances into the side-netting and the game finished all-square. But a composed, mature performance from the Blues gives them plenty of positives to take into their next game - against table-toppers Tonbridge Angels on Saturday.
