Wingate and Finchley convincingly beat Haringey Borough 3-0 at home in the Velocity Alan Turvey Cup on Tuesday night. Goals from Spencer McCall, Ben Pattie and Reece Beckles-Richards secured the Blues’ second win on the bounce after Rob Laney’s solitary strike gave them victory against Needham Market on Saturday.
Kweku Lucan was handed his first Wingate start in place of Laney for the cup game, with Afolabi Obafemi spearheading the attack. And it was the striker’s deft one-two with McCall that allowed the midfielder enough space in the box to curl a shot past Valery Pajetet and open the scoring for the hosts after 18 minutes.
The Blues almost saw their lead doubled by Haringey’s Ramii Sheriff, but the defender’s sliced clearance bounced clear off the bar. Lucan sent a spinning close-range shot over the bar after 40 minutes but Wingate went into half-time with a slender lead.
Ten minutes into the second half Pattie held up a pass from Luke Ifil and brushed off two defenders before firing the Blues 2-0 up. Obafemi blazed a shot just wide of Pajetet’s goal but, amidst a flurry of injury-time chances, Beckles-Richards collected a low Marc Charles-Smith cross and smashed home the third.
Wingate will have to wait to find out who they face in the second round, but host Margate in the league this Saturday.
