Luke Ifil was a key part of Wingate’s two early chances; first finding Reece Beckles-Richards, who could only fire over the bar before taking aim himself. However his shot bounced back off the post and away to safety. His midfield partner, Ahmet Rifat then curled just wide from the edge of the area after some silky footwork helped him to beat his man.

Just before the half hour mark, Afolabi Obafemi was brought down inside the area and Wingate were awarded a penalty, which Sean Cronin dispatched with great aplomb. The in-form Marc Charles-Smith then came close on twice occasions. David Hughes superbly held his first shot, before the striker struck the crossbar with a fierce drive from inside the area.

Eight minutes into the second half, Charles-Smith was at the heart of the action again. He was played in down the right side of the area, chipped the ball across goal and it was met by Rob Laney – who headed home Wingate’s second goal of the afternoon. Harlow’s only chances of note were long distance efforts that were no trouble to Shane Gore in the Wingate net. Obafemi then produced a volley that required Hughes to tip wide before Ahmet Rifat headed just over from the resulting corner.

The final three chances of the game fell to Beckles-Richards. The first was blazed over the bar after Charles-Smith played in the striker in on goal, the second saw Hughes push a powerful drive behind for a corner and the latter was tipped wide by Hughes again – who had kept the score respectable for large parts of the encounter.

However, it was only 2-0 when referee, Rick Bloy blew for full time – goals which give Wingate confidence going into Tuesday’s League Cup Quarter Final versus Billericay Town at Summers Lane.
