Wingate & Finchley could be forgiven for feeling hard done by at Fetcham Grove following a performance deserving of, at the very least a share of the spoils, and would have been scratching their heads after suffering a late 2-1 defeat at the hands of Kingstonian.
Reece Beckles-Richards latched onto Marc Charles-Smith’s early throughball after two minutes, but saw his strike blocked. With four minutes on the clock, Tom Collins’ low cross from the inside right arrived to Sam Alderson at the far-post who slotted into an empty net.
Despite the set-back, The Blues went on the hunt with a spell of pressure. Rob Laney’s curler from 18-yards dropped into the arms of Rob Tolfrey after six minutes. Three minutes passed when Charles-Smith’s header arrived to Beckles-Richards, whose lob evaded the frame of the goal. A minute later, Ahmet Rifat’s header from Keir Dickson’s corner was blocked off the line – and Beckles-Richards squared to Laney whose attempt was parried by Tolfrey on 14 minutes.
The hosts had a glorious chance with 21 minutes played – Kane Haysman collected a drop down from close but skewed wide. Charles-Smith’s cross evaded Tommy Tejan-Sie arriving to Luke Ifil, who flashed across on 23 minutes. Tejan-Sie took up a central position blazing over after 33 minutes – and Keith Rowland’s men were rewarded for their perseverance in the 36th minute.
Laney hustled for Tejan-Sie’s lob, prior to Ex-Kingstonian youth Rifat chesting down and poking across for the equaliser. Tejan-Sie then hit a venomous strike from the edge of the area which beat Tolfrey, but crashed off the underside of the bar.
Three minutes from the break, Alec Fiddes broke clean through only to poke wide under pressure from Shane Gore. Four minutes following the restart, Tejan-Sie’s phenomenal defence-splitting pass found Beckles-Richards for a one-on-one who struck wide. Rifat’s looped pass was inadvertently headed onto the roof of the net by K’s Manolis Gogonas on the hour.
Tejan-Sie cut inside a minute later playing in Beckles-Richards, who blazed over the upright – and Dickson curled his 25-yard free-kick over the bar reaching 65 minutes. Ola Williams cut inside and looped a cross towards Laney, whose powerful header couldn’t be kept down with 10 minutes remaining.
And in the 92nd minute, Fiddes latched onto possession on the edge and returned a ferocious volley back towards the top left corner to leave the north Londonders in dismay.
