Wingate and Finchley will have to wait another year for a chance to visit Wembley after dropping out of the FA Cup with a 4-2 loss away to Maldon & Tiptree.
Like Wingate’s youth team, who crashed out of their own FA Youth Cup on Thursday, the senior side found themselves behind inside five minutes on Saturday.
An equaliser saw the sides go in level at the break but they were behind again not long after the restart.
Steve Clark’s side battled to pull it back to 2-2, but Maldon’s pressure eventually told and a Jorome Slew hat-trick saw them through to the Third Qualifying Round at Wingate’s expense.
The game had barely started before the ball found itself in the Blues’ net.
Jorome Slew, sensational all afternoon, walked through two tackles before popping a shot into the bottom corner with just four minutes on the clock.
Olumide Oluwatimilehin and Marvin Morgan both came close with headers, while at the other end Danny Parish and Slew both saw good chances go begging.
And it was an innocuous corner that Ben McNamara flapped at, giving Ahmet Rifat an easy volley to make it 1-1 at the break.
Just over 10 second-half minutes had been played before Maldon regained their lead.
A poor clearance allowed Slew to smash his second into the bottom corner from a tight angle.
But five minutes after that Morgan headed Wingate level, finishing off a splendid cross from Tanasheh Abrahams.
Any chances of a Wingate turnaround were extinguished after 73 minutes when Slew completed his brace from a low cross.
And his hat-trick goal came three minutes after with a well-taken goal from just inside the box.
