Bostik Premier

Wingate & Finchley’s astute 1-0 away performance against Needham Market at Bloomfields saw them get up and running in the newly-named Bostik League. Rob Laney poached the all-important moment, and the scoreline could have been by a larger margin if not for goalkeeper Danny Gay.

Reece Beckles-Richards made The Blues’ intent loud and clear when he picked up possession off the left, shimmied past challenges, cut inside and fired inches over the upright from 25-yards.

Laney broke past Keiran Morphew before floating a cross towards Spencer McCall at the back-post, who just found Darryl Coakley able to head the danger clear. Callum Harrison set Jack Simmons down the left, his first-time cross looking for Ryan Gibbs charging in was hooked away by Sean Cronin.

Beckles-Richards’ one-two with Luke Ifil saw him through for a one-on-one, only for Gay to make a low stop from his placement across. Joe Whight’s low, curled free-kick from the edge was palmed away by the outstretched Shane Gore – which proved to be a rare touch for the stopper.

Ahmet Rifat sprayed across to Ifil, who poked through to McCall attempting to find the far corner, but Gay quickly pounced and made a close stop. Ifil struck goalwards, the ball deflected into the path of Laney who set-up Joe Kizzi, whose placement was sent over.

Keith Rowland’s outfit proved more clinical six minutes into the restart. Beckles-Richards paced down the right, looped towards Laney at the back-post who out-muscled Morphew before drilling inside the near-post. McCall’s quick-taken free-kick set Nathan Mavila away whose looped cross almost found its way in, forcing Gay to palm away.

Mavila popped into Ifil, who on the turn had his top corner stinger palmed away by Gay. Marc Charles-Smith cut inside off the left, Gay denied his initial strike from close, Ifil on the rebound looked for the chip only for the ‘keeper to recover and tip the danger over with the ball looping in.
