Football returns to the Maurice Rebak Stadium as Wingate and Finchley welcome Cray Wanderers for the first game of the season.
One of the Blues’ new signings, Ashley Nzala, put the hosts ahead early on with a composed finish in the bottom right corner.
Nzala continued to run riot in the first half as he came close again, with Ben Frempah also hitting the woodwork just before the hydration break.
However, Wingate’s fairytale start came crashing down following a red card for Tobi Tinubu, resulting in Harrison Lamb making way for Kai Thomas Fraser.
The substitute played a massive role in keeping the score as it was going into half time, with the hosts escaping a flurry of chances, whilst creating a few of their own.
Going into the second half, the Wands introduced Lateef Adaja as they look to push for an equalizer.
Wingate picked up two early yellow cards, including one for manager, Ahmet Rifat, as they continued to fight against the press of Cray Wanderers.
After an hour of gameplay, the visitors saw their biggest chance go awry as a pouncing Saul Kader put the ball over the bar from a few yards out.
Then, finally in the 76th minute, The Wands grabbed their equalizer through Ade Yusuff, commencing a very tense last 15 minutes for the Blues.
Despite that, Wingate kept their shape and persevered through the expectations of another Wanderers goal and held on for the draw.
The Blues will be disappointed to concede late into the game but should be proud of how they reacted to the early dismissal of Tobi Tinubu.
With an attendance 239, it was a performance to reflect and build on.
